Pivotal Tracker is a very neat and free tool to manage your product backlog and is certainly a step up from an excel spreadsheet.

A small drawback is that Pivotal Tracker doesn't have the functionality to print user stories on index cards for you physical board (which my excel sheet had).

Note: No tool can replace a physical task board that the team can see all the time.
